AEDs are more and more commonly seen in public facilities because they can be used to save lives. Of course, people have to know how to use them. Have you been properly trained? Businesses and organizations can have employees complete AED training when they go through CPR certification as well. While this comes at a cost to a business, it is a good investment, one that serves the community.

When you attend an AED certification class, there are of course going to be instructional materials provided. The materials can come from different organizations, but the American Heart Association is one of them. Not only will there be written instructional materials, but there will also be videos available as well. Each instructor is going to handle a class differently, so hopefully you have a lively instructor that uses all materials and engages the class.

An AED is of course an automatic external defibrillator. It’s important for people to understand how to recognize emergency situations where these devices are necessary and can help. AEDs are equipped with screens and voice prompts, but that doesn’t mean someone should try to use one without knowing what to do. The devices must be used correctly so that they are effective and save lives.

It can take a minute to get to an AED and get it ready, and of course time is of the essence. Someone should also call 911 of course, and while someone is fetching an AED to use it, another person can be doing CPR. Hopefully, the AED will work, and it’s important to note that CPR is of course going to need to be continued afterward. While CPR is effective, a portable AED is as mentioned earlier a more common piece of equipment in public places these days as an extra live saving step to take before paramedics arrive.

Sometimes it can take quite awhile for paramedics to get to a patient. Therefore, an automatic external defibrillator can make all the difference. While instructions are provided with an AED, and the equipment itself provides voice instructions, this is a hands-on, life saving attempt, under pressure as the clock is ticking. That’s why the training is so important.

If you haven’t went through the training to get your CPR and AED certification, it’s time to think about doing so now. Maybe you’ve been in a situation already where someone had a medical emergency and another person used an AED. Perhaps you’ve never even seen one or noticed where they are located in certain public places. Now is the time to familiarize yourself with them and take the class so that you can be another person that can be counted on to help save lives.

You never know when you’re going to be in that position. You never know when it could be you, too, and you want others to know how to grab an AED and take action. Maybe you can think of a place that you frequent that is minus an AED, and you could talk to people in your community about having one available there.
